What to do for Nesting/Preparing for the Baby

It was after the overwhelming feelings of being pregnant with my first child washed away. And after I recovered from the symptoms of the first trimester, the first thing, which came to my mind was what to do for nesting. I knew nesting was going to be tough from day 1 because the world had shut down due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Due to restrictions, We were unable to leave our homes for shopping and hence we bought everything online for the baby.

Online shopping is not my thing, but it was the only option. I made lists of what to get and what not to get. I wanted to get the baby’s nursery done, well before she arrives. I also wanted to get so many things for her, so I started visiting baby online stores. The items there were so cute that I started filling carts with everything possible.

Before buying I took advice from my husband, and there, we got the reality check. He asked me to hold my horses, as we should not get such maniac while buying stuff. You can not trust all the online stores in a go. So, you cannot buy everything from a single store. And that night we sat and made plans about what to do for nesting.

Stay Calm

The first and foremost is staying calm and not losing your cool. Tension and eagerness will not take you anywhere rather might lead to high blood pressure during pregnancy. My husband asked me to sit down and take a deep breath. We still got around 5 months to get things done. We started with small things and then went to the bigger ones. So, when you are going to start preparing for the baby, remember to stay calm. It is not a competition, enjoy it, because it is one of the happiest times of your life (Read more: https://mommystery.com/?p=454).

What to buy and What not to Buy for Nesting

Let us begin with what to buy. Although I thought a lot before buying stuff for the baby, still I bought some items, which the baby never used. Let’s dig into the things that we should have when the baby arrives.

Dresses – one of the most important items is the dresses. I bought a lot of dresses for my baby, all girly colors but now with experience, I can say that we should not buy too many of them. A newborn outgrows the dresses so soon that you cannot even make them wear them more than once or twice.

Booties – booties for a newborn proved to be useless for me. I bought all matching booties with my dresses, but since she was a fall baby, she remained covered and never wore any of these.

Baby Skin Care set – although I used the skincare set, which I bought for my baby, I regret it. Babies’ skin is so delicate that one should not expose them to any chemicals. After learning this, I only used virgin coconut oil for moisturizing (it helped with rashes too) and a little bit of baby cologne.

Carrycot – I did get one, but I never ever used it. My baby always wanted to be carried in arms and never remained happy in the carrycot or baby basket. Elders say that we should not hold babies in arms for longer periods, else they will become addictive. But I believe that a baby has come out from the cozy environment of the womb and needs a mother all the time because she feels safe. So yes, it’s the time to pamper your baby and not listen to every unsolicited advice.

Bath seat – being a first-time mom, a bath seat is a blessing. It came in very handy, and I gave a bath to my baby very easily in the seat.

Wardrobe – Make sure that the baby’s wardrobe is ready before the baby arrives because, after the baby’s arrival, it gets exceedingly difficult to manage things. Especially shopping and stuff because for the initial months baby is going to drain all your energy and time (we will discuss it in detail in another post). So, prepare her wardrobe, nursery, and everything before the due date.

Baby Crib– for the first year of her life, the baby and I co-slept. Its easier to breastfeed her while co-sleeping and increases the attachment with the baby (co-sleeping comes with its own set of problems and side effects, but that is not the topic for today). But it is a good idea to get the baby’s crib and make her sleep in her crib during daytime naps as well as lay her down in the crib during playtime. This gives you a chance to get a cup of coffee and some free time to yourself.

Baby blanket – undoubtedly, it is a must-have before the baby arrives.

Nursing equipment – if you plan to breastfeed your baby, it is a hell of a task. Some of the must-haves for nursing are nursing bras, nursing pads, nursing covers, and nursing suits, and snacks, a lot of them. These things make your nursing experience with the baby a breeze.

Breast pump – I planned on exclusively breastfeeding my baby, but I got a breast pump just in case I need it. She is a year old, and I never used that pump. It’s still a sealed pack. Although it is good to invest in a breast pump, and I did too after a lot of research, but in my case I never used it.

Enjoy your Time

The time you are spending right now with your husband is never going to come back. The first thing that gets affected after the arrival of the baby is your relationship with your husband. Both of you will hardly have any time for each other for the first few months of the baby’s life. So, I advise you to plan your dinner dates, watch movies, go to the beach, visit the countryside, and have outings together keeping in mind the COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions before you step into parenthood.

I have mentioned some of the things we should do for nesting. Make sure to remain stress-free as well as be prepared for the time. Being a parent is one hell of a project but equally rewarding, good luck.
